about

Three years ago we were starting a short tour down the west coast. The weather was just beginning to turn and we were driving into the mountains of Oregon state.
The mist hung low in the trees and everything was muffled with the light drizzling rain. As the change in season started to sink in on the drive I began to write Find me in the hollow.
I had been picturing a character having just come through civil war era battles, struggling with what we understand now as post-traumatic stress.
In those battle you didn’t fight like most of our battles are fought today. Miles away, pushing button and pulling triggers. You were in the shock of the violence, deafened by gunfire, shaken by cannons and your hand pushed blade through flesh to take another man's life. You stood watching friends fall bloodied and shattered. Fumbling with a weapon while adrenaline made you half stupid.
This song catches the character in a solitary moment of reflection. Coming to terms with things he cannot forgive himself for. Down in a hollow in the woods by a stream, coming apart at the seams, hoping someone will come find him where he is.

lyrics

the weather moves more quickly up here in the hills
if we sit for too long we’ll find the weather at our heels
and rain will over take us as we travel on our way
and we will settle in until the weather finally breaks

so find me in the hollow where the creek bed meets the trees
find me a bit smaller for the things that I have seen
find me in the hollow I’ll be back down on my knees
find me in the hollow where the creek bed meets the trees

a fly on the wall- the world seems a bit clearer
but even with this view it all seems so very unfair
and we can move more quickly if we point ourselves downhill
but things that trouble here, I know, will trouble us there still

so find me in the hollow where the creek bed meets the trees
find me a bit smaller for the things that I have seen
find me in the hollow I’ll be back down on my knees
find me in the hollow where the creek bed meets the trees
