about

This song was born out the strictly cathartic exercise of deciding to turn and look full in the face of something I had found I had been avoiding.
I don’t remember the first time I saw her hand begin to shake, but I knew what it was when it happened. I had spent much of my highschool days around my grandfather as he slowly lost ground to Parkinson’s disease. But my mind wouldn’t let me believe that the same terrible creature was now methodically closing in on my mother.
One night on a drive back to Seattle I let the whole thing roll over me, overwhelm my heart that i’d kept so distant and cold and these lyrics started pouring through my mind.
Drawing parallels from the season: the leaves shaking and eventually blowing loose, with seeing the ailment take its toll and knowing inevitably that one day, sooner that i had expected, she would be gone.
The song follows memories of my childhood. I was raised on a small Island in the Aleutian Chain of Alaska and there are pleasant ghost of that time that still wander through my mind.
In the end the focus is on the time we still have. The realization that if the time we have left is going to be full of memories then I need to fill it with good ones. We I cannot avoid loosing someone by avoiding them.

lyrics

October leaves are changing, I can see them shaking they are barely holding on.
One good breeze could send them gently falling to the path where we are walking as we hold onto your hands.

My brother and I, wearing matching jackets, my boots are second hand and his are handed down.
We walk across the island to the park and your slender legs are kindly keeping step with ours.

I recall the only trees for miles, a short walk from our house past the apartments on the rise.
And wind would cut the island to the bone, we could watch those trees shake like they're afraid of what's to come.

I was so afraid to let go of your hand and I felt like the smallest man when you were not around.
The years have not been easy on your hands and as I've grown into a man I've done my best to be around.

It breaks my heart you can't play your guitar, can't sign my birthday cards and I can only watch you shake.
Your father shook the same way that you do and I'm afraid for the day the winter comes to shake you loose.

But there's still time to spend in holding hands and though they don't take your commands so well I can hold them just the same.
My brother's boys are wearing matching jackets and they hold onto your hands just like we did back in Alaska.
